Skip store-bought tortilla chips and make air fryer tortilla chips at home instead. Air frying tortillas chips are so easy to make and are healthier, cooked to perfection and addicting to eat with guacamole, this restaurant style salsa and this chunky salsa to name a few. They are perfect to snack on or have as an appetizer and are totally guilt free without the excess oil you get from deep fried tortilla chips.

Why you will love these air fryer tortilla chips

    • Healthier snack without the added oil you get from deep fried tortilla chips
    • Easy to make and cooked to crisp perfection
    • You only need a handful of pantry staples to make these at home

Best tortillas for air fryer tortilla chips

You can use white or yellow corn tortillas or you can use flour tortillas, but corn tortillas are personally my favorite and taste so much better. Also, corn tortillas is what's commonly used for tortilla chips.

    What air fryer to use

You can use any air fryer. I use this (affiliate link) 5 quart Cosori air fryer and have been happy with it. Air fryer temperatures tend to vary by brand, so make sure you test your air fryer and double check the cooking settings that works best for your air fryer.

Don’t have an Air Fryer? Use the oven instead to make baked tortilla chips

Baked tortilla chips in the oven will have the same results as an air fryer but does take longer to make. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Spray a baking sheet with cooking spray, then place tortilla triangle wedges in single layer. Bake for 15-20 minutes until crispy. After 10 minutes turn the tortilla chips with kitchen tongs and bake for another 5-10 minutes. Remove from the oven and add salt to taste

What you’ll need to air fry tortilla chips

    • corn tortillas - yellow or white corn tortillas
    • oil – I like using olive oil or avocado oil, but cooking sprays work here too.
    • taco seasoning or kosher salt - you can definitely go the easy route and just add some salt but I like using taco seasoning to add some more flavoring to the chips.

How to make homemade air fryer tortilla chips recipe

Step 1 While the air fryer is pre-heating you can start by brushing the oil on the tortillas or spraying the oil on both sides. Then sprinkling the taco seasoning or salt on top. Or you can cut the tortillas in six triangle wedges and brush the oil with taco seasoning. Both ways work, but it's much easier to add oil and seasoning before cutting. Both ways shown on the images below

Step 2 Add the tortilla triangle wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket. You will do this in a few batches depending how big your air fryer is. Air fry at 350 degrees 5-7 minutes. At the 5 minute mark you can shake the basket and continue air frying until the tortilla chips have reached a crispy texture. When you shake the basket you can sprinkle more seasoning or spray more oil if desire.

Step 3 Add crispy tortilla chips into a bowl or serving plate. Continue adding all the tortilla triangle wedges into the air fryer until all haven been air fried. Enjoy and serve with your favorite salsa or meal.

The best part about making tortilla chips at home is that you can experiment with any seasoning you like. Sprinkle some chili powder to add some heat. If you like to keep it simple just sprinkle some kosher salt on top once the tortilla chips have been air fried and enjoy.

    Storing tips

If you have any leftovers which is very unlikely since they are so addicting, you can store these chips in an airtight container for up to 5 days. However, these healthy air fryer tortilla chips taste their best the day of.

    Equipment

    • Air Fryer

    Ingredients

    • 6 corn tortillas
    • olive oil (or avocado oil)
    • ¼-1/2 teaspoon taco seasoning (or kosher salt)
Prevent your screen from going dark

    Instructions

    • Preheat air fryer (my air fryer has a pre-heat button that preheats for 4 minutes at 400 degrees
    • Brush or spray oil on both sides of the tortillas and sprinkle taco seasoning Or in a small bowl you can mix the seasoning with the oil and brush the tortilla chips, this method makes sure the tortilla chips are fully coated well with the seasoning.
    • Cut tortillas in six triangle wedges
    • Add tortilla chips in a single layer in the air fryer basket and air fry at 350 degrees for 5-7 minutes (6 minutes bake perfectly in my air fryer) Double check your chips mid-way and give the basket a shake and continue air frying.
    • Place air-fried tortilla chips in a large bowl or serving platter and continue air frying the remaining tortilla triangle wedges - this will take a few batches to make. *

    Notes

*Want to skip the taco seasoning? you can simply just sprinkle kosher salt and enjoy. Or sprinkle your favorite seasonings.
*Not all air fryers are the same - some air fry quicker than others, so double check your tortilla chips midway. My air fryer's sweet spot for the perfect tortilla chips is 6 minutes.
