These whole wheat pita pizzas are a great healthier pizza alternative. They are quick to make,
are full of flavor and guilt-free
The weather around here has been close to 100's and I should be blogging about something fresh, fruity, icy cold, and summer appropriate, but pizza always sounds good to me. I'm a big fan of NY style pizza. After spending a few days in NYC a couple of weeks ago, I am definitely missing seeing the pizza joints on every corner and of course devouring a slice here and there. So, this healthier whole wheat pita pizzas did the trick.
My perfect pizza is pretty simple, but still oozes with yummy flavors, sauce, and melted cheese. Just give me a slice or two of a NY style pizza with pepperoni, a nice crispy thin crust, some pineapple chunks and red pepper flakes and let’s call it a day. I really think I could eat pizza everyday… ok, maybe not everyday, but you get the point, I LOVE pizza! Lately, I've been making healthier pita pizzas with some of my favorite toppings and they definitely have been satisfying my pizza tooth.
These individual size pita pizzas are quick and easy to make and won't harm that waistline. I used oat bran & whole wheat pitas that are super low in calories. Instead of using pepperoni, I used low sodium turkey pepperoni, a small can of no salt added tomato sauce, part-skim mozzarella and a small can of pineapple chunks. I grew up eating my pizza with pineapple, so it's a must for me. I love the sweetness the pineapple adds to the pizza. It's the perfect savory and sweet combination.
I have also tried using shredded parmesan cheese instead of mozzarella and it tasted just as good and is lower in calories too. These are just a nice healthier alternative. Even though each slice is not dripping in oil and cheese they are still pretty tasty and guilt-free. These whole wheat pita pizzas are seriously so easy to whip out. I really REALLY like these. Within the last week I've had these for a quick lunch, appetizer, and light dinner. Umm yeah... I'm kinda addicted to these at the moment and Jerry is a fan of them too.
Now lets all enjoy the first weekend of summer and some yummy healthy pita pizzas while we are at it!

I love this idea Ana! I think it's perfectly appropriate for summer, too, using pitas instead of making pizza dough saves a lot of time and mess in a hot kitchen!
Ana
Thanks Sam! These are super quick and non-messy to make. I timed myself the other day to see how fast I could prep these before putting them in the oven and it took like 4 minutes! The clean-up was a breeze. 🙂
